Everyone hits this eventually: the only copy of a photo you have is 400 pixels wide, and you need it big. You drag the corner in an editor, it gets bigger, and it looks worse — soft, mushy, vaguely smeared. That's not a mistake you made. It's what resizing does. Why normal resizing always looks worse

A 400×400 photo holds 160,000 pixels of real information. Blow it up to 1600×1600 and you need 2.56 million. The other 2.4 million have to come from somewhere.

Traditional resizing guesses by averaging. Each new pixel is a blend of the neighbours it sits between. That's mathematically sensible and visually terrible: averaging is blurring.   • Extreme jumps. 2x and 4x are the sweet spot. Asking for 16x from a thumbnail gives you a large, confident, invented image.
